Check Your Local Boxer Rescue
Are you looking for a happy, playful and yet very intelligent dog. A Boxer can be a wonderful companion to an individual or a family. They can be high-spirited, curious and energetic but they are also eager and quick to learn. They tend to be constantly on the move and appropriately named due to the playful boxing movements they use with their front paws when playing. Boxers are very affectionate and tend to get along with children very well. If you are considering a Boxer as a new friend, look into your local Boxer Rescue. Many times you will find that someone was unable to afford or care for a wonderful dog and was forced to leave them in a rescue, especially in this economy. Your next best friend could be waiting for you just down the street.
This breed bonds very closely with its family. And is known to be extremely protective of you, your family and your home. In this sense they make very good watch dogs. They have been employed by the police and the military. Keep in mind, while at your local Boxer Rescue, that this breed needs a strong owner. You must set limits and make sure your boxer understands that you and all humans ‘rank’ above him/her. If you can do this you will have a successful relationship with your dog. Boxer owners need to be calm, firm and confident.
Boxers can be taught to get along with other dogs and household animals, like cats. But don’t trust them alone with birds or rodents. They can be taught to leave them alone, but if the Boxer is left to its own devices, well it is just too tempting. They also require daily exercise, mental and physical. The local Boxer Rescue will be glad to suggest daily mental activities that you can offer your dog. Without these the Boxer can become very high strung.
This breed does best if you have at least an average size yard for exercise. They are also more comfortable in temperate climates because they chill easily in cold weather and have a hard time cooling themselves in very hot weather. But if you can find them in your local Boxer Rescue then they obviously strive well in your area. Like with anything else in life, you get what you give. If you give your Boxer quality time and effort then that is what you will get in return.
